Dear families,
As you know, the Virginia General Assembly recently passed legislation that makes numerous changes to the Program’s governance, operations, and benefits. The legislation became law on April 22, 2026, and it will take effect on July 1, 2026. We have linked a policy brief to help explain some of the new and expanded benefits included in this legislation. Most of the expanded benefits will be available for expenses incurred from the date the law takes effect (July 1, 2026). To expedite access in the interest of Program participants, new and expanded benefits that are not addressed in current regulations (Motor Vehicles; Guardianship, Conservatorships, and Trusts; and Education Advocates) will be available immediately. Your Case Specialist is available to talk through what this means for your family and to make sure you are able to access all the benefits available to you. Please note that the brief does not contain an exhaustive list of changes required by the new legislation. Our team is continuing to work through the full implementation, and we will keep you informed as additional updates are finalized.
